The Hidden Cost of Turnover

Most organizations understand the direct cost of turnover, as it’s relatively easy to calculate using average salary and annual turnover rates. However, the true cost is often far greater than these numbers suggest. There are several hidden consequences that can negatively affect organizational performance, culture, and long-term success. While these hidden costs take many forms, most fall into three key areas.

Employee Disengagement: Losing employees almost inevitably affects the morale and engagement of the remaining team members. When turnover becomes frequent, employees often begin attributing staffing shortages, increased workloads, and other resource challenges to leadership. Over time, this can lead to frustration, performance issues, and an overall decline in employee engagement.

Customer Experience: Customers often feel the effects of turnover just as quickly as your organization does. Frequent staffing changes can lead to inconsistent communication, slower response times, and disruptions in service. This can cause reputational damage and ultimately a loss of business.

Organizational Knowledge: A constant churn of employees results in the loss of undocumented knowledge. When employees leave unexpectedly, critical knowledge rarely transfers effectively. Over time, organizations are forced to relearn lessons, repeat avoidable mistakes, and deal with productivity losses that can be hard to measure.

Turnover impacts far more than staffing costs, it affects employee engagement, customer experience, and organizational performance. Organizations that regularly gather employee feedback through surveys and other listening tools are better equipped to identify issues early, improve retention, and reduce both the visible and hidden costs of turnover.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

My favorite vacation spot is really anywhere that gives me the chance to travel and experience something new. I love exploring new places, different cultures, and getting outdoors whenever I can. Recently, I traveled to Olympic National Park for a hiking trip, and later this year I’m excited to visit Italy. No matter where I go, though, some of my favorite memories will always be the beach trips I’ve taken with my family over the years.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I love staying active, making sourdough, trying new restaurants, reading, and spending time outdoors. Most of all, I enjoy being busy with my family. A lot of this season of life is spent supporting my kids hobbies, but honestly, I wouldn’t change it for anything!

What is your “key driver” in doing what you do?

What motivates me most in my role as a Client Success Manager is the opportunity to connect with people all across the country that I may never have met otherwise. I love supporting organizations that are intentionally investing in their people and building strong workplace cultures. It’s rewarding to know that the work we do can help create environments where employees feel valued, engaged, and genuinely enjoy coming to work every day.
